Auditions (Clown and Teenage Girl)

Although the title does not sound incredibly informative this corresponds with the story of two people in the lyrics highlighted by;

The girl with the curls

And the sweet pink ribbon in her hair
She's crawlin' outta' window
'Cause her daddy just don't care
Come on

The clown with the frown

Drivin' down to the sidewalk fair
Finger on the trigger
Let me tell you it is quite a scare

The girl with the curls highlights the idea of a young innocent girl subjected to inadequate parenting and feelings of general melancholy with her life to which she grows up (connoting a change in her state of mind and essence) and finally meets someone and move on.

Two roles are required for this particular verse, The young girl no more than 7 in age to connote the innocence who we have enrolled Freya Clarke, We chose her as she is very close looking to her sister Jade Clarke who will be playing the older teenage girl so it adds towards the realism of the music video.

The clown with the frown, This verse tells the story of a guy with occupation stress who is suffering from depression however in our video to add more depth into this character we are going to present him as being a happy clown at the beginning as to connote his joy at entertaining kids to begin with, his love of bringing happiness then as wear and tear persists and life rises to cripple him he will turn and change from the happy clown to the sad clown and threaten suicide to which 'bad' (another character presenting evil) will almost enforce will hand the clown the gun, to which 'good' (another character presenting morality) will combat by trying to take the gun out of his hand in time.

Pitch

When asked about our idea's, we had discussed our Target audience, which appeared to be males from 14 - 21's so teenagers  and our early ideas such as the age being depression. At the beginning of the song the first verse mentions 3 people in the lyrics, these people would be reflected upon in the early verse with only reference to them as chapters in a book would do (As the lyrics represent the story of 3 people) so there story would then be told in detail later on in the song.

Two questions asked were about the band being in the song which has been decided that the band will feature on some of the chorus's whilst the singer will be in the video itself presenting a perspective that is isolated from the perspective of the people involved so to give the same view as the audience.

The other question was a question about technology and the idea of using a green screen, the idea of using it was to recreate heaven as a way of connecting all of the stories into one and connecting the two characters (good and bad), the problem presented was if it looks too fake and ruining the video. if it does then we need to change our idea to a gathering of characters so our idea may be changed yet.

Secondary Target Audience Work

A target audience is the people who you believe would enjoy and consume your media product, with this in mind it becomes obvious how a persons success in acquiring the correct target audience means to a media producer and how it can make or break the Media chance of success.

So we need a target audience, which is found using triangulation across primary and secondary data to acquire our audience, secondary data has brought me to this summery,

 "Los Angeles, New York and Chicago in the U.S.
I would say that many indie bands are after the late teen and 20 something demo. A little beyond the MTV years. The more pop you go the younger you go. As people get a little older (at least ones that would get into indie rock) they start to explore things more. Dig a little deeper.
Although now-a-days with the information age being what it is and the changes it has had on distribution what is indie rock anyways"?

Then this was found that highlights the target audience of an alternate rock video.

Target Audience of Indie Rock music magazines

This now suggests the target audience are White males, aged 16-24, working class or in education, their interests include;

  • Music
  • Playing music
  • Photography
  • Dressing up
  • Gigs/Concerts
  • Smoking
  • Online Social Media
This could indicate the 'hipster' subculture. Their dress sense includes

  • Suits
  • Shorts
  • Jeans
  • Baggy clothes
  • Old Vintage Clothing Etc.
This seems very typical of our genre's target audience.

Primary Audience Work.

The key questions asked would be;
What do you like in a music video?
What would you like to see in an alternative rock video?
Do you like the music videos?

Responses to this include that most people that are our target audience are 15 - 20 the young adult age range, they are normally working class who's interest are listening to music a lot, seeing friends and socializing.

So the video must be something that these people will play in their social groups that they will enjoy or at least talk about the video so to do this the video must have something to grab their attention that could possibly relate to one of their lives which is easier as the story contains 3 separate lives so it can apply to more people whilst it is still a happy song, which in these social groups another song following this description is popular with 5,921,103 views which is Hollywood Undead's Bullet.
A song like this that is both sad concept happy tune is a good example of our song which proves their is a potential audience for this.

Do you like music videos?
Yeah I like to see a mainly performance based video with narrative involved throughout the video.
We have placed performance throughout the video around the narrative in response to this so it would fit our target audience.

How often do you listen to music?
everyday at least.
Knowing this in order to make our video popular the performance must be rather good to entice them to keep listening.

The main points we got was that we need a video that can appeal to this type of person. Our video needs to include a performance at least, preferably a performance based however this may not be applicable due to the convention of narrative and having a story to be told for the audience to identify with.
A narrative that is different to mainstream music's nothing that focuses on the vocalist like a pop star typicality, like watching them sing while dancing. We need a narrative that portrays a story or an anecdote that can show a problematic situation/s that can immerse our target audience into our video and song.
So this has changed our idea's to suit the target audience, instead of the original idea of full narrative, we have placed a guitar into the video and a performance part in the video to fit with the target audiences requests.
although the song's pace is slow some parts will have faster editing such a some type of switch between the young girl and the teenage girl would be appropriate in order to keep the interest of the viewers.
